How are you being treated for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) ?

I am 28 and have suffered from it for 13years and have not found a dr that thinks i'm "old enuf" or "bad enuf" Would love to see them live a day in my shoes... So I was just wondering, what options are out there for treatment. I've used Imodium and Maalox etc... But don't seem to last longer then an hr and arn't always effective. I can't bare to leave the house without knowing there will be a washroom at my convience at any given time. Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance

How are you being treated for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) ?
Dicetal is one of the medication that can help relieve some of the symptoms.Try to stay away from hot spicy food. I know that it is boring eating a bland diet ,but it might keep you away from the IBS symptoms.Stress is a trigger,so try not to get too stressed out over things.Following a healthy diet, getting at least 7-8 hours sleep and engage in some form of exercise will help in controlling the symptoms.
Reply:See if you Dr will let you try Leahy's #3

It's a phenobarbital (sp) mix It was the only thing that helped me for many years

Later I developed a Vit B-12 problem, now that I get B-12 shots

I don't have an IBS problem

Not exactly sure of the connection, Just know that it works for me
Reply:I have IBS %26amp; was diagnosed with it back in the late 70's. You need to go for a second opinion, as soon as possible. You need to see a Gastrointerologist. I saw one at the Cleveland Clinic, which is the greatest place to go. I'm sure you have a great place to go in or near your city. Good luck to you!
Reply:my wife and her friend are both 50 and suffer from ibs. I suggesdted metamucel course texture in some oj everyday and it has done wonders for them both. start with ateaspoon or less until you see how your body reacts. make sure you get the coarse texture.
Reply:keep in mind that ibs is one of the symptoms related to celiac disease, where there are symptoms like IBS, chronic fatigue, and mood swings. There is a blood test they can run for the antibodies. CHron's is another situation where you can't leave the house at times. So, I'd go to the GI to make sure there is not something else going on.
Reply:Ask your doctor for a RX for Bentyl and take it. Watch your diet. It is trial and error until you find out what you can tolerate. Make sure you use a stool softener and don't let yourself get bound up.

You would be surprised how prevalent this condition is in today's society. Stay away from stressful situations and avoid people that get you riled up. Good-luck. Trust me, you can live with this, thank God it isn't worse.
Reply:have you seen a gastroenterologist? I saw one about your age and he ordered all the usual tests, made the diagnosis and gave me a prescription for Bentyl. The Bentyl works quite well for me. That and I have learned over time what triggers an attack and avoid such foods like the plague. And I drink at least two liters of water every day.
Reply:I recommend all natural Optiflora. It actually will start treating the cause and not just the symptoms. It's a two-product system that includes Probiotic (Bifidus %26amp; Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora). Due to its patented encapsulation method, it guarantees delivery of 500 million microflora to intestines. It's very effective in treating IBS and perfectly safe for all ages with no side effects.

Also, it's been shown that Stomach Soothing Complex helps many enormously and lessened the anxiety of needing to locate a bathroom.

Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.
Reply:Medications only treat the symptoms. It's the food you eat that causes your problems so you must modify your diet. Most people inflicted with IBS or more severe chronic diseases like Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitius know that certain foods trigger a reaction and those are the one's you need to avoid. Keep a food journal to help you identify those foods that make you find a washroom-quick. Acidy, sugar, caffiene, yeast, fatty, greasy foods generally do it to me. I definiately have to avoid anything made with milk. It's a culprit in a lot of people's diets and they don't want to believe it. Over time, you'll discover the foods that set you off and you must avoid them to maintain good bowel health.
