Why does my daughters breath smell like this?

My 8 year old daughter came home from school today and I couldn%26#039;t bare the smell of her. She had her bath last night like she always does yet she smelled like a sewer. I checked her shoes and everything. I discovered that the overwhelming smell was coming from her mouth. I was in the bathroom this morning when she brushed her teeth and then after I discovered the horrible smell coming from her mouth I went into the bathroom with her and brushed her teeth and tongue myself. She thought it was funny. I realized that I could be making her feel bad so I made light of the situation but I just sat next to her on the couch and her breath is as bad if not worse then when she got home. What could be causing her breath to smell like a sewer? I%26#039;m truly concerned. Thanks for decent answers. I know this sounds like a joke but this is a serious matter. Thanks again!

Why does my daughters breath smell like this?
I am so glad that you asked this question because my daughter has the same exact problem and I have no idea why. She is 4 and ever since she was about 12-18 months old she has had this problem. When it first started happening we thought that she may have something stuck up her nose but there was nothing. I even asked her dr. and he said there was nothing wrong at all. If you find anything out please post it for everyone.
Reply:I would try something stronger at first like listerine, if that doesn%26#039;t help any then I would go to the dentist. You would rather be safe then sorry.
Reply:Sounds like she has a build up of bacteria that emits hydrogen sulfide and/or methyl mercaptan. Try using a tongue cleaner and a mouth rinse called ProFresh which contains chlorine dioxide.
Reply:It could be an infection in her mouth. I would take her to the dentist to find the cause.

Let%26#039;s be honest--a dentist would easily be able to tell you what is wrong. A littel bad breath is fine but when it smells THAT bad?
Reply:she might have gotton some stuff stuck in her mouth and the school lunches (ughhhh gross) she might be eating some garlic in the lunch or bacon bits or some food like that ,that makes your breath stink she might of thrown up check the school lunch or what they are feeding her in class
Reply:I agree with the person who suggested a stomach problem. She may have an intolerance to milk products as well. That usually leads to a sour smell in the mouth.
Reply:Are all her teeth in tact, none of them are broken?

The smell is common with tooth decay.

If all teeth are accounted for, could be Gum problems

Acid reflux is a big problem especially if the smell get worse when she burps.

If she hasn%26#039;t seen a dentist for a while it may be a good time to make an appointment. Rule out the Dental problem, and let the dentist give you a suggestion and or see you family doctor
Reply:it could be from her stomach not her mouth children get acid reflex as well so go to the drs not the dentist if your worried
Reply:Take her to the dentist.

She may have a gum desease or simply a rotten tooth unlikley for her age but an expert will find out. your dentist will help.

They recommend a mouth wash as well.

Also check her diet, does she eat a lot of meat and few veggies, especially whole uncooked foods?

Try fresh not prepared (cooked, boxed, frozen or otherwise prepared foods). A healtheir diet may help as well. Some kids can be picky eaters this may have little to do with you daughters breath but might as well check.

A simple check up will tell you a lot.

Reply:sinus infection - years ago i was told about a brother-in-law that as a small child put a bean up his nose . my mother-in-law gave this child countless baths . found the bean after it started to sprout .years later i got a sinus infection that wouldn%26#039;t heal . when it started to smell i went to the ear , nose , throat doctor . he cleaned out my sinus and put me on meds.
Reply:This sounds weird, but this happened to a dog i had once and discovered it was a thyroid problem. It could definitely be medical... get her checked out.
Reply:it could be some sort of gum infection. or maybe even a rotting tooth. I%26#039;d take her to the dentist.
Reply:It sounds like your daughter has a bacterial infection. You should contact her doctor who can precribe something to clear it up........but it%26#039;s going to be ok...atleast her %26quot;potty mouth%26quot; is curable, and won%26#039;t require a thorough washing out with soap like some kids! In the meantime, help her hide the odor with some ACT mouth rinse, and keep a good supply of breath mints around for her. It would be sad if this presented itself as an opportunity for other kids to taunt her.
Reply:i think your daughter might have gum disease..or she should try u know the tongue scraper things..u know that u get 80% more bacteria of your tongue if u scrape it not brush it with your toothbrush!!
Reply:take her to the doctor tomorrow
Reply:If it%26#039;s sudden like this and does not go away in a day, you need to take her to the doctor.....if it goes away in a day it was probably something she ate, but if the breath is savage and came on fast like this it could be strep throat (does not have to hurt) or tonsils or sinus/adenoid probs or any number of things. Take her to the doctor..better safe than sorry.
Reply:sounds like Ketosis to me - that makes the breath smell of feces, basically she%26#039;s not eating right
Reply:Sounds like she has acid stomach, my daughter is the same way. It%26#039;s just a build up of acids in the stomach, you need to get something like Mylanta or Rolaids and it should help.
Reply:infections?
Reply:could be halitosis, it%26#039;s something like the rapid growth of bacteria on the back of the tounge and throat, i think?!?

your locl dentist knows all about it and has treatments for it as well
Reply:The decay of food stuck between teeth can be a big contributor in this...try flossing/ or a supervised waterpick directly after meals.

another cause is bacteria on the tongue, use a tongue brush.

Ask her if her tummy hurts, sometimes it can be from bacteria in the stomach. if all else fails call your dentist %26amp; or physcian. there is a new product comming out soon for this very problem that has very promising results. right now on the martket there is Breath RX %26amp; its the best out now, but see your dentist %26amp; ask about up %26amp; comming new breath products.

my late wife was a dental hygenist %26amp; i helped her study a lot for school

good luck
Reply:This is no uncommon with kids randing from 8-12 yrs old. The main sources of bad breath are the stomach and the tongue. So, brushing the teeth (and not the tongue) will not remove the bad breath. As for the breath originating from the stomach, it is related to her diet. Do some searching on Google in regards to diet and bad breath.
Reply:Too many mushrooms, ask mario he has the same problem..
Reply:When I was a kid I put stuff in my mouth till I was 11. Not reasuring, I know. But make sure she brushes the roof of her mouth too.
Reply:I think here there could be 3 possibilities, either one she is eating a lot of food containing garlic (the after smell of garlic is very bad), secondly it could be coming from her stomach so she may have some kind of stomach disorder, or thirdly (as in 99% of cases of halitosis), she is producing too much of the nasty smelly bacteria in her mouth which causes that white coating on your tongue. I would suggest a mouth wash called retardex. unlike other mouth washes it doesn%26#039;t just temporarily mask the smell it actually kills the bacteria which is the cause of this unpleasant smell. If this doesn%26#039;t work i would recommend seeing a doctor.
Reply:Could be an infection in her mouth
