Does anyone think that the punishment for the Jina6 high school students was too cruel for their actions?

Last week, there was an article that I read in a magazine about some high school students in Louisiana, who had been in a fight at their high school. In a town of just about 3,000 residents, there were a small high school where black and white students attended. There was a caucasion student standing under a tree when an african american student went and stood under the tree with the caucasion student. The next day, there were nooses hung from the tree where they stood. After seeing that, a fight broke out, leading to a beating of a caucasion student. There were six students who were supposed to have been apart of the beating. One of the african american students have remained in jail since December and is being tried as an adult. They are facing attempted murder which involves a shoe as the murder weapon.

Does anyone think that the punishment for the Jina6 high school students was too cruel for their actions?
Yes. The punishment did not fit the crime. They should have been charged with assault and battery or something other than attempted murder.
Reply:They need to be punished, it%26#039;s not about race, it%26#039;s about them beating up a person. Sinple assault case, I don%26#039;t care if were a string of pearls hanging from a tree, it%26#039;s still no excuse for what they did.

Can you say...JAIL TIME!
Reply:Thats a hard subject. It was stupid for that kid to hang nooses (if it really was him and not some other) but I really think the 6 students took it a little too far as to beat the kid. They could have easily gotten him suspended or kicked out of the school if they stayed calm. But I think its right for them to be punished for what they did. I would not be surprised if this went all they way to the Supreme Court since we have people like Rev. Al Sharpton down there yelling about racism. But who knows!
Reply:You need to either read the article again, or read more complete coverage of the event. Here%26#039;s what actually happened:

1. In September of %26#039;06 a few black students hung out beneath a tree which white kids had staked out as their own. The following day three nooses were found hanging in the tree. They were found to have been placed there by three white students who were then suspended from school as they should have been for their act of racism.

2. In December of %26#039;07 in an unrelated incident, six black students ganged up on and severely beat one white student who was a classmate and former football teammate of theirs.

3. Charges were accordingly filed against the black participants ranging from criminal assault to attempted murder.

4. Five of the black students were bailed out of jail, but one student with four prior arrests for criminal conduct remained because he wasn%26#039;t able to make bail.

5. A State Judge justifiably refused to reduce bail because of the severity of his charges coupled with his prior arrest record.

6. To date, my understanding is that no actual punishment has been set for any of the offenders.

...and you think they were having just good, clean, fun, huh? Well, maybe you%26#039;ll be the next one who is attacked by six thugs from some other race - or even your own race. You might find that your attitude regarding punishment would change.
Reply:One blow can kill... any one who %26quot; beats up%26quot; any one should, at least, got to jail... and they should bring back the chain gangs... color has nothing to do with this pov.. any one who acts like that... at any age over puberty should go to jail and pay their debt to society by working it off at hard labor.
Reply:I believe that the crime may %26quot;not%26quot; fit the punishment, but you also have to weigh each situation equally. The %26quot;white%26quot; kids had no right AT ALL to do what they did, but putting your hands on someone is a little bit different than haninging some rope in a tree. I%26#039;m not taking up for either side, and they should be punished accordingly, but no one has the right to put their hands on a person and beat them brutally. The African-American kids could have handled it a different way!
