I may already be late. He is coming up on 5 years old now. At what age should I try to teach him? Am I already too late?
I don%26#039;t know if it matters or not, but he has had some added stress this year. He was in a car accident last Christmas Eve that broke his leg. He was in a wheelchair and cast for about 2 months. I also believe that he may have a speech issue. He tends to hang on his words and draw them out when he talks. Kind of like he is having trouble thinking of what he is trying to say. I%26#039;ll ask those questions in other discussions, but I thought that I would add those in there to kind of assist in a response. Thanks.
Also...any teaching tips are greatly welcomed!!! :-)
What is the right age to learn to tie shoes?
Don%26#039;t rush tying shoes. Mine is almost 7 and does not tie his. They make so many slip on shoes now. When my boys were 3 they both stuttered a little. My oldest does this every now and then still. I would not worry to much. I think their little brains are just faster than their little mouths sometimes. Just tell him to slow down and then tell you. Mine would get so frustrated. But it passed. Try to relax and not worry. Kids can tell when we moms are upset.
Reply:at least by age 25
Reply:You are never too late. He needed time to get over the fact he had been in an accident. Like they say %26quot;its never too late too learn.%26quot;
1. Bunny Ears
Probably the most common method for teaching kids to tie their own shoes is the %26quot;Bunny Ears%26quot; method.
Tell the child that he needs to make his shoe laces into %26quot;bunny ears.%26quot;
First, he needs to secure a knot for the bunny%26#039;s head. Take the laces and cross them over to make an %26quot;X%26quot;. Then, pull one ear through the bottom of the %26quot;X%26quot; and pull tight.
Say, %26quot;Now we need to give bunny some ears.%26quot; Loop the laces into %26quot;bunny ears%26quot;.
Tell the child that now we need to %26quot;make the bunny ears tight so they don%26#039;t fall off%26quot;. Then make another %26quot;X%26quot; using the %26quot;bunny ears%26quot;, slide one %26quot;ear%26quot; under the %26quot;X%26quot; and pull tightly.
Reply:It is a milestone to be reached by Kindergarten age. I don%26#039;t remember if they have to know it as a readiness entrance requirement or not. If your son is not in Kindergarten yet, you should check your community%26#039;s school department to see where the readiness checks are going to be held for kids your son%26#039;s age. They will be able to help you with his speech problem as well. Speech impediments are things that they look for when they are reviewing your child to see if he is ready for school. Your child will then be given help to overcome this issue and progress.
If your son is in Kindergarten already, speak with his teacher about your concerns, he or she will have these answers for you!
Reply:My son just learned to tie his shoes the other day. He will turn 8 next month. I wouldn%26#039;t concern myself to much with it. They learn when they are ready. My son always liked the velcro strap shoes and therefore wasn%26#039;t exposed to tie shoes much, and even when he was, I had to tie them because he just got frustrated when he tried and couldn%26#039;t do it, due to lack of hand coordination I guess. And he didn%26#039;t have any %26quot;slow issues%26quot;, he has been on the high honor roll and a fast learner when it comes to education. I just thought of it like this...how many 20 year olds do you know that can%26#039;t tie their shoes?? Exactly. None. Sooner or later they all learn. Give him a big hug and tell him it%26#039;s OK...he will get it soon. I have 4 sons and I have learned to adopt the %26quot;LOW STRESS POLICY%26quot;. Stress when you need to stress and let the rest go. Good Luck!
Reply:Ok now this takes PRACTICE (that they don%26#039;t like to do) and PATIENCE (for little hands it%26#039;s hard to do for some reason). Just work with him each day UNTIL he gets frustrated. My son was 5 almost 6 before he got it really good and still sometimes they%26#039;re not tight enough. Try this:

this site has loads of ways to help in tying shoes.
Reply:5-6 some schools don%26#039;t let the younger kids wear strap shoes.
Reply:4-6 are real good ages 4 that
Reply:a week or so before kindergarten
Reply:I think I was 5 or 6. My mom couldn%26#039;t tie my shoes right when I needed her to do it and she said %26quot;Time to learn little girl!%26quot;
There are plenty of dolls for boys and girls that teach tying, zipping and buttoning all on one doll. My daughter has one that%26#039;s a dog.
It takes practice and patience on both the part of the parents and the child. He has to want to tie his own shoes. Don%26#039;t worry. He%26#039;ll be doing it before he goes to college. My husband just turned 30 and still doesn%26#039;t keep his shoes tied. It%26#039;s a boy thing sometimes. At least he knows to keep his nose wiped! LOL
Reply:i learned when i was 5 or six i think...shortly after i started kindergarden.
